I had cast one of the members of the touring company of "The Lion King" last January. We did three casts with mixed/not great results. One of the concepts I've had for a while is a series of angels. As I recently began sculpting the feathers for use on a wing, and playing with resins in casting, I began to revisit my less than perfect casts from January. I put together this sketch for a "Fallen Angel" piece and am very excitied about the prosepects of this completed piece.

I had contacted Hitch about two months ago on the Model Mayhem site about the possibility of doing a lifecast and photoshoot, as he has one of the finest physiques I have seen. I didn't hear back from him until a couple of weeks ago. I got him a flight to San Diego on Friday morning and we did a photo shoot and the first of two lifecasts. What a great model. Not only a great physique and face, he also brought the movement and emotional content to the shoot that I look for in all of my models. I spent the rest of Friday working on the first cast and preparing for the second cast on Saturday. I decided to forgo another shoot on Saturday to focus our energies on a very challenging lifecast. My technique has been rapidly progressing and it was time to try some new things. Hitch was a real trooper and we ened up achieving the most technically proficient and most emotionally charged piece I've ever done. These are some of the results of our efforts.

Encouraged by the success and feedback from my first show, I decided to accellerate my learning process and spend all of my "non-photography" days doing art. I wanted to do a full length piece to go with my "Spirit Series". I had interview my model "Ed" a while back but we were both busy with other projects at the time when out of the blue Ed calls to let me know he is free to do something. So he came down for an allergen test and we measured him for a potential full lenth tips of fingers with arms overhead to toes piece. Ed was perfect. Being smaller in stature he measured 77 inches fingers to toes which was an ideal overall length for this project. This was my first casting with the model lying down. That in itself presented special challenges for me as all casts prior to that were done with the models standing, so removing the mold is pretty straight-forward. Reclining though means I have to "roll" the model out of the mold and make sure it all releases without tearing. Also the quantity of materials needed exceeded what I normally mix at one time, Along with that is the limited amount of time to make sure the model is compltetly covered with alginate and have the cotton material pushed in before the alginate sets up. All of these things posed additional challenges. Ultimately the project was pretty successful. There are quite a few hours necessary to bring this cast to where I want it, but I think it will be a defining piece in my collection once it is complete. Below is an artist sketch concept of a potential result. Also my experiments with resin impregnated fabrics adds to the excitement that this is going to be an exceptional sculpture.

This was my first show in ten years. It was my first opportunity to show the lifecasts I had been working on over the last six years and to show my new edition images on canvas. Here's a slideshow of the studio set as a gallery.
